Nearly 25,000 Lost Electricity in Queensland and Victoria Following Intense Weather Systems

Around 25,000 households in Queensland's southeast woke up experiencing outages on Monday's dawn after severe thunderstorms impacted the area, generating strong winds reaching 109km/h.

Substantial Hailstones and Broad Destruction

Locals observed giant hailstones as large as 7cm in some areas. Meteorological experts confirmed that multiple regions across the state had been hit with large hailstones.

Response teams were attempting to repair electricity service throughout the affected regions, with nearly 70 crews deployed to address the widespread outages.

Victoria's Climate Difficulties

Simultaneously, approximately 1,000 households in Victoria also encountered electricity disruptions after Melbourne experienced its wettest day in a year and a half.

State Emergency Services handled nearly 600 calls for help across the area, mostly for building damage but also for downed trees and inundation.

  • The Werribee area - recorded considerable storm damage
  • Hoppers Crossing - various assistance requests
  • Wyndham region - over 175 help reports

At the height on the previous day, in excess of twenty-eight thousand energy customers in the state were without power.

Weather Forecast

Humid circumstances were expected to linger along large portions of the state's eastern regions this next several days as a low-pressure trough continued to attract humidity against the shoreline.

Tomorrow was forecast to be the wettest day, with ongoing severe weather risk anticipated across multiple regions of both regions.

Safety Concern

Health officials cautioned that there was an greater possibility of epidemic thunderstorm asthma across the northern rural areas, particularly given the current weather patterns.

This warning comes after previous incidents where similar conditions led to substantial respiratory problems in the region.
