Multiple Injured as Turbulence Strikes Delta Flight Arriving in Sydney, Australia

Several people sustained injuries when a Delta Airlines jet traveling from LA to Sydney encountered significant turbulence this past Friday.

Delta Flight 41 "went through a short bout of rough air" as it touched down at the Sydney airport, an airline spokesperson informed. Four flight attendants required medical attention.

Local paramedics said they treated a total of five people, and transferred three of them to a medical facility with minor injuries that such as pain in the back and headaches. The injured spanned from their 30s up to the 70s.

The event represents the newest example of aircraft encountering turbulence, with experts indicating that climate change is a key driver.

There were 245 people and fifteen staff members on the Airbus A350, the Delta spokesperson added, stating that the plane touched down "safely" at the airport at shortly before 7 a.m. on the day in question.

Paramedics reported they got a call just only 180 seconds prior to the plane arrived, and response teams were waiting on the tarmac.

The reasons turbulence is becoming more common - and potentially more dangerous.

In the previous year, 25 people were hurt when a separate Delta aircraft, on a route from Salt Lake City, Utah to Amsterdam, Netherlands, encountered "considerable" atmospheric disturbance just two hours into the long-haul flight, and diverted for an precautionary landing.

Recently, travelers and staff on a certain international flight endured a harrowing short but intense bout of severe turbulence. An individual lost their life and dozens were injured, as those without seatbelts rose out of their seats and crashed back down.

Turbulence is a common occurrence on aircraft journeys, and while occurrences of significant turbulence are reportedly becoming more frequent, they are still very rare.

Estimates show that there are approximately 5,000 incidents of severe or worse turbulence each year, out of a sum of over 35 million journeys that currently occur globally.

Intense turbulence is categorized as when the sudden jolts of a jet passing through rough air masses generate greater than a significant G-force on your body - enough to propel you from your seat if you were not fastened by a seatbelt.

As a changing climate shifts weather patterns, researchers alert that air travel could become more turbulent: temperature changes and changing jet streams in the upper atmosphere are likely to heighten the regularity and severity of dangerous in-flight bumps.
