Around 50 automobiles have been covered with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.

Automobiles, building surfaces and mailboxes were marked, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they stated in a official communication.

Police report they were alerted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a man discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored fluid.

The fluid had been placed in the shape of a swastika, they reported.

Police then found multiple other marked cars and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.

These symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation outlawing the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.

Officials say preliminary tests suggest the substance was most likely blood from a person.

"At present there remains no lead as to its source; officials are currently not cognizant of any harm in association with the occurrence," they commented.

Municipal representatives said they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the community for details.

A high-ranking official said the vandalism made him without words and required to be addressed quickly.

"This act hits the center of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack in 2020," he wrote on a platform, referring to the killing of nine people by a shooter targeting individuals of migrant background in 2020.
